They are very odd birds, but I think they have personality when they are in very small numbers...
1/2500, f7.1, iso800, 500mm (300 w/ 1.7) D610
Big crop vertical from horizontal (50%)
Taken in rare NW sunshine, I normally don't bother to take them in
that light, but I almost got away with this one.
Well Dan, I can't see why "you almost got away with this one.." It looks wonderful to me. What makes you think this? The colours and light are beautiful. My only very small nit would be to darken the lighter spot in the top LH corner? Thank you for sharing this!

excellent exposure Dan, you pulled great detail in both whites and blacks. I just wish for a tad more head turn towards us

In my monitor, the reddish bokeh above the bird's head starts to show some banding but otherwise I think this is a really great shot. I am not too bothered by the head angle. And I do love the details on that feather! :D

You've made a very common bird look beautiful. The background/water compliments the bird well, lovely colors. Thank you for sharing, Dan.

I think this is lovely.
The color palette is beautiful.
IQ is excellent and your exposure is perfect.
I would crop a bit off the top to eliminate that brighter patch in the LUC .
A very dramatic image,
Gail

Not an easy bird to get right with the extremes in the tones, you've done a very good job with this one Dan,

This is quite beautiful. Tough to photograph in sunlight without blowing out the white bill, but you've done it masterfully. I like the head turned toward the light. The background colors are beautiful. I personally like the comp/proportions as posted, but would tone down the UL bright spot.

Thanks everyone.
I thought the beak is right on the edge or a bit over the edge.
It was all blinkie on the back of the camera.
That is why I got away with this one, saved in ACR....

Extremely well captured, Dan. Love all the detail and how well you handled the white beak. Beautiful colors in the FG and BG.

Now this does a coot "justice", if only those raptors would appreciate such a beauty instead of a meal. Love this for it's rich colors and such perfect exposure. wonderfully composed, bravo!
