This is an in-camera blur of a Cape Gannet at a colony off the western coast of South Africa. Being such a large bird makes it easier to follow with the camera (some of the time!). I used a low ISO of 100, the highest f-stop possible to obtain the slowest speed possible. This was during the day in bright light. You can change the f-stop and speed to produce different effects.

Beautiful and elegant bird in flight, Nancy, love the soft colours and the blur makes it all kind of dreamy.
Love this, I must try your technique when in the Kalahari next month!
Kind regards,

Beautiful image, Nancy. It has an ethereal look and gannets are the perfect bird for this kind of image with their soft colors and distinctive faces.:S3:

This is the first time I've seen a gannet blur -- I love it!! As said above, the subtle colors fit perfectly with the lovely blur. Perfect shutter speed and panning!

Beautiful blues and love the blur intersecting with the fg wing-tip. A possible suggestion; maybe tone down the neck and lighten the face just a wee bit. Lovely.

I agree with the comments about the combination of the blur and the colors. The wing blurs and intersection on the near side really appeal to me. My first impression was that it might be good to darken the blurs of those wing tips, but I like Jackie's idea of softening the head and neck better.

I like the motion and the colors, blending and complementing each other.

I like the effect you captured on the wings--definitely conveys the feeling of flying and movement. Lovely colors.
