Hi Fred! A striking color combination and pose you've got here; I like it! Normally I would suggest toning down the sky, but I think it works with the bright yellow of the bird. I don't think you've got enough DOF in this photo; the Mark III will easily handle ISO 640 or 800 and you could have stopped down. The OOF cattail detracts from the bird IMO. Also, you may be able to bring out more detail in the blacks with Shadows/ Highlights. Thanks for posting!
A classic pose and great colors though you might consider backing off on the yellow saturation just a bit. Beautiful background. I think Doug's comments are on the money.
I like the singing pose in this one. I agree on reducing the yellows a few points and might sharpen some more as it looks a bit soft on my monitor. A lower angle would have been great and you can easily go to ISO 400 without compromising image quality with the Mark III.
