The background here is not about its colours (although their subtleties are appealing), but rather the lines and patterns in it. I love the "brushstrokes" that add tons of interest there. I suppose it does not hurt that the faint colours do compliment this female American Wigeon rather nicely too IMO.
Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/200s., f/5.6, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, about 70% FF, deepened the blacks, NR to the BG.

Details as good as ever Dan, and I agree with your assessment of the ripples in the water.
However, for me, the framing feels awkward with the rear cut off, it feels neither a portrait or a full body shot.

I like the exposure and detail - excellent.... but I don't get the chopped off tail.

I like the details, IQ, complimentary BG and water texture. I too would like to see the whole duck which would include more of the water texture. Nice image Daniel.

The water does look very nice, as does the bird. Nice detail and colours throughout the image. I don't mind the crop, and it is different.

Love the detailed IQ and water. I see what you mean about the lines in the water looking like brush strokes. Pretty cool!
Too me the crop feels "cut off" also. Good to try different crops though (something I should do more) :)

I am not liking this crop though. Just feels to cut-off for me. " Go big or Go small" I say!!
IQ as always excellent and the Cadieux style low POV is very much in evidence here!
