The smallest bird found in N.A. The Calliope is noticably smaller than the other two types I find around here. The male's gorget flares outward when it is courting the female or when it is chasing off an intruder. The noise generated while doing this is quite different as well...almost sounds like a wasp caught in a paper bag.
Canon EOD 1D MKIII, Canon EF 100-400 L, multiple X-sync flashes at 1/32 power, 1/250 shutter speed.
Pretty bird and nice complimentary BG. Good eye contact too. Image could stand a tad more sharpening.
No sharpening on this. Each time I attempted to sharpen it in the downsized mode I got unacceptable results. Even with the full sized .tiff I was getting too much sharpening effect. In the full sized mode it is quite sharp by itself. Not a whiz with PS :( Amount 50 and radius of .3)Quote:

This looks much better...I keep getting the darn halo effect. I have tried several different methods, thought I had it for awhile, but their back! The only way I seem to be able to get rid of them is to go around the entire image with the clone brush and remove them manually. Not a problem full sized, just when reduced for the web.Quote:

That's where I am having a problem. Selecting the subject with the magic wand tool takes forever unless the background is one plain color, extracting removes part of the bird because the wings tend to be slightly transparent. I was at a course where the instructor did it in a flash with layers, but I was unable to grasp the concept as he covered it in a couple of minutes.Quote:

Try using the Quick Selection tool instead of the magic wand (I think Quick Selection is a new CS3 feature). Then refine the edge of your selection. Here's a screen shot of what I did in about 10 seconds. You won't get a halo doing things this way. I was pressed for time this morning when I did the repost, and I used a sharpening brush plug-in instead of the technique I just described.

Thanks Douig, I gave it a try, but obviously missing something on how to refine the edge. But it seems to work, just have to play with it more. On my first try it seemed to want to jump around and select or not select what I wanted.Quote:
