My previous post (http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ead.php/127765) wasn't the perfect head angle. For reasons incomprehensible to me, I had overlooked this one, taken about 30 seconds later. The BG is trees and grass on a hillside.
Canon 5D3, 100-400 II, ISO 800, f/10, 1/640. Basic LR adjustments (lovely smoky early morning light thanks to a horrible fire NW of Yosemite), and into PS for some cleanup of specular cows in the BG. Slight NR (not noticeable at this size) and a few % of Detail Extractor.
Hoping to find out what kind of hawk it is -- rear view added in the earlier post.

This is a super-shot Diane! Everything is right about it - the sharpness, the eye contact, the soft BG, the perch! Well done!

Hi Diane, I did not comment on the head angle of the previous one, but here it is much stronger. Well done on all counts, wish it was mine!

Very nice light on this one. Good IQ and headangle works for me too. Interesting perch and nice BG.
this is a juvenile red tailed hawk. The juveniles have barring on the tail and the tips frayed from the time spent in the nest

Hi Diane, good angled pose, and I like the overall light and IQ in this. Those are mean talons, and Im fine with the weathered perch. I do like that BG too.

Classic shot ...hard to find any issues and that background is to die for

I like both, Diane. The background, the perch, the bird all make for lovely images. I would loved to have photographed this hawk. Thank you for sharing.

What a sweet shot. I like the comp in this one, and the HA (not that the other wasn't also good). Fabulous BG and light, and I love the hint of red on the bill.

Thanks, everyone! This was a lucky find. I wonder if they're there all the time or if I caught a higher population from a migration. Definitely have this place on list for a return visit -- just wish it wasn't 6 hrs from home.
