Nancy's fox reminded me of this one from a couple of years ago, so thought I'd toss it out. It was a wiling model at the local bird rescue center. It's a big crop, as I couldn't get close enough with my 70-200 f/2.8's minimum focus distance of about 6 ft, on a full frame body (Canon 5D3). I can't wait to get the new 100-400 and pair it with my small-sensor 7D2. Add a 1.4X and I'll have a macro zoom!

Fabulous! Love the sketchiness & fineness of the feathers and the absolute clarity of the eye, with the star highlight. Great how that distinctive curve of the feathers from just above the eye and down shows so well and adds a lovely graceful line. It appears almost as if the eye is peaking out from behind a veil. Sounds like a great combination of camera and lens coming up for you!

Hi, Diane, I love the abstract look to this, especially the sensuous curve around the eye. And the starburst is wonderful. A great way to start the new year! Congrats on the new camera combination:S3:

Thanks, you two! I'm not a birder, but I'm surprised how un-birdlike this eye is -- to me, anyway.

Diane, Owl eyes are very different from the eyes of most other birds. Since the owls mostly hunt in the dark they must have large eyes.

I'm always amazed how interesting extreme closeups of eyes can be. This is a very striking image, love it!

This is very engaging and reminds me of an eye peeking out from behind a tree. The detail is quite something. Held up well with a large crop.

The catchlight is great, and you've cropped it so the curved lines are an important part of the image. The dark edge on the right effectively keeps the viewer's eyes in the image. Nicely done.

Thanks everyone! Looking forward to shooting more eye closeups with my new Canon 100-400 II and 7D Mk II. Perfect for that!
