Some of the elements of this image are good- super background and nice head turn (in my opinion at least; never been indoctrinated). These are great little birds but they fidget a lot and I think this is contributing to an overall softness in the image, at least in the head. I would give less space above bird and try to avoid shooting up at subject. I'm still working on chippies. They are difficult!
Nicely composed with good detail and head turn. If it had been possible to have moved a little to the right I believe the anlge would have been better and as already mentioned it appears to be a little soft on my monitor. Many thanks for sharing Paul .
To me it looks as if the wing feathers are sharp. And it seems that you used the middle sensor and focused on the wings at the wide open aperture. Thus, the head is soft. Best bet in cases like this is to be sure to focus on the eye either by selecting an off-center sensor or using One-Shot AF and recomposing. Also, when shooting "up the butt" it is always good to use some extra d-o-f.
