Back-up Your Stuff - A friendly reminder

We had a tree fall on the powerline about a half-mile or so from the house. Either when the tree fell or they reconnected the power, we had a power surge come through the house. We "lost" 2 surge supressors, 1 battery backup device, 1 TV, 1 DVD player, a DSL modem, and my main photography/mapping CPU. The only thing not backed up on my hard drive was about 3 days of shooting (whew!).

The battery backup and modem are both going to be replaced under warranty. An internal fuse was all that was blown on the DVD player, and for $150 I had a guy come out and replace the power unit in my computer and it is alive and well! (YEAH! I didn't even lose those 3 days of imagery!).

So, if you aren't already doing it, take the time sometime soon to at least back up your important files!

Back it up, then back it up again!

I have a surge protector on the house at the box to try to help too. It only cost $50 and my electrician neighbor installed it for me for free. He highly recommended it.

Back up and back up some more. I use 2 500 gig drives on my tower. I use one as a C drive and every week or so clone it using Acronis to the other D drive. I also back up the images to an external drive and back the external to another external that I take to work for off site storage. Anal? maybe, but I feel somewhat safe.;)
