Problem with lens mounting

I have a Nikon D2X and recently my 1.7 telextender; 60mm macro lens;600mm lens; 80-400 all have a problem seating (locking ) in place when I mount the lens. The lens doesn't lock and can be turned back off the camera without depressing the lens release button. After a while the lens seems to lock in place but the lens release button is difficult to depress. I'm hoping someone has experienced this problem and can give me an idea of the solution. This is usually just lock pin on the lens mount binding or getting stuck due to residue build up. You can send it in to be cleaned or if you are a DIY type of person you can clean it at home. I have cleaned these before in the past to avoid the down time and the $60-80 cleaning fee.
