I am looking for opinions /comparisons between a 5D3 and a 1D3S image quality at low ISO. I want to replace my 2nd body (50D) for a better camera. I intend to use it for landscape and a little bit of portrait work, so I don’t see the high ISO performance and faster focus of the 5D3 as much of a real advantage, and I much prefer the size, layout and ‘feel’ of the 1D series…. Also there is a good 1D3S for sale locally at $2000, vs $3500 for the 5D3.
Regards

1DS3 is obsolete now. For the same price you can get a used 5d2 which is a better choice for your application. Very sharp files plus the much better LCD, LV etc.

Don I picked up a refurb 6D from Canon for less then the going price of a used 5D II for the same situations you mentioned might also be an option. Due to the popularity of the magic lantern hack for the 5D II the current used market for them is at 1,700.00

Thanks Don. Another body I had not considered, but should.. How do you find the IQ? I will be using the Zeiss 18mm and the Canon 24 to 70 series 1 as my landscape lens..

DXO has the sensor rated one point below the 1DX and I am liking what I am seeing so far, when I was looking at the specs the camera is an upgrade from the 5D II and I am really liking the Wi Fi feature.

I'm having some prints made that measure 50 to 60" on their long side and they stand up to very close scrutiny. They were all made with either the 5D MkII or 5D MkIII. For your application I see no need to go for the superior AF system of the 5D3. The 6D files are equal to the 5D2 and 3 and has adequate AF function for your usage.

Hi Guys
Thanks for all the help here. I have reviewed the 6D and from what I have read it will do the job nicely. I plan to go that route or maybe a second hand a 5D 2 or 3. When is Canon going to make a match for the Nikon D800?

Canon has a match its called the Sony a7r ;) you just need to adapt the lens mount to canon but you retain all function and you too can enjoy the same sony sensor that is found in the d800e ;) and yes it is a mirrorless...
