Ruddy Turnstone.

I can count on one finger how many Ruddy Turnstones in breeding plumage during fall migration I've seen (I see juveniles every year)...and here it is:bg3:. It was quite flighty too, compared to what I've encountered before...barely allowed me to take this image as it was very nervous, looked at me and then fled after two more actuations.

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1000s., f/5.6, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, significantly darkened the blacks and upped the saturation more than usual (the image had a washed-out look due to hazy conditions), cloned out an ugly piece of goose doo-doo on top of the rock. Small crop for comp, but I have also created a pano version with the water at bottom plus about 30-40% of the thickness of the perch cropped out.

Nice creation, Daniel. I like it as presented, but it's one of those images that loans itself to quite a few options. I did a browser scroll and eliminated some from the top. I like the texture of the rock and also like keeping the bird high in the frame.

I like the pose, perch, IQ and congratulations on your rare find. I would like to see the pano version.

Glad you got a couple of frames in before he took off. We've got to get you to Ft Myers Beach, FL where you'll have a ball laying on your stomach all day for the shorebirds. I can only imagine what kind of stuff you'll come back with!

I could see just a bit off the top. IF you took any off the bottom I would think about cropping until it's all rock. Either way, I like the way it's presented here as well.

Nice comp and light.

Dan for me the turnstone looks good - no very good, but I am not too keen on the surroundings. They are natural enough but they don't add anything to the image. Just my personal view I suspect many may disagree.

I like the small in frame look you created and the rock perch with the green mossy algae is awesome. I also like the water movement in front of the rock

I enjoy the OP better than the pano, mainly because of the nice water movement on the right hand side as it swirls against the perch. I enjoy the spacious composition and subject size in the frame. The background vegetation elements are great. The light quality is not the greatest imo, though your exposure works is spot on, if the light quality had been better...The bird's plumage looks really sweet given the time of year.

lovely exp & IQ. would prefer the comp in the OP.
