Seeking information on using calls

I have a couple of bird call programs on my iPhone and think I would like to get a speaker. I assume a speaker would be placed near a perch to which I'd hope to attract a bird, or would the calls be just as effective if the phone is in my pocket -- it seems loud enough. I assume placing a speaker is the best, since that seems to be a common practice.

Any advice about placement is welcome, and also about speakers. Daniel recently mentioned that he uses the iMaiango and someone somewhere had recommended the Mcally Podwave or the Grandmax Teeny Tweeker. Not planning to be the DJ for an outdoor dance -- just want to call some little birds.
