Purple Finch

Finally some color after weeks of Juncos.

Jim,
Nice and sharp and cool perch.
I do not know what camera you use or what settings, but this has the same purple caste as your previous photo.
The entire bird should not be purple.
Auto WB works well in most bodies for most circumstances I think, Is this the setting you are using?

I'm not too familiar with this species, so can't comment on the color, but the inquisitive pose is super. I'd consider trimming from the bottom to the top of the left bend in the perch.

I don't know what they look like in your part of the world, but this is how ours look, especially now in breeding plumage. Maybe you're thinking house finch? i don't use auto WB.

A fine photo and you know better what they look like in your area.

Loving that inquisitive look on this bird, lots of character for sure. The light in this is extra nice I think, liking the small size perch and it's curvature, background is super smooth. Nicely done indeed Jim, the only thing I would consider altering would be to crop off the bottom to the the denuded bark on the branch and a bit more off the right to compensate....but aside from that ...really very nice

Nice bird set on a good backdrop, the colors compliment each other well to enhance the subject
the perch is nice , i like the head angle it gives a inquisitive look on the bird which adds interest
Exposure looks nice and wonderful details, love it

This is very nice. Nice BG that acts as a beautiful foil for the red finch.
Before reading the previous comments I thought you needed to crop from the bottom.
I like the inquisitive pose and this is how our purple finches look in Nova Scotia as well.

Nice background and perch and the bird looks excellent. I had one on the other day. By the time I focused on, the bird was gone and I'm supposed to be fast.

Very nice image, and good points raised above. Great to see this species I've been going a little crazy trying to figure out what flavor my finches are. Apparently they can have some color variations. One male has some very decorative gold areas on the head. I'll try to remember to post some in the ID forum soon.

And nice to know where all my juncos went. They are such cute little things, and not as frightened of me as some other species. One got in the house a few months ago. I was very startled to find it sitting on the kitchen counter! Apparently had worn itself out trying to get out the window. It was looking up at me with it's cute little shiny black eyes, just sitting very quietly. I spoke to it very softly and told it I was going to pick it up and put it back outside. I was amazed that it let me. As we got to the open door it gave a mighty wiggle and escaped. No more leaving the screen open when I run in or out for a minute.

Hi Jim, love the inquisitive pose, and I do like the soft light, which in turn has brought out the colour and details nicely. I like the meandering perch, but agree to come up from the botton to eliminate the bend LLC. Great BG.

Not a problem. There are about 15 of them buzzing about my yard so I double checked the ccolors and they are true.

I've never had house finches and I don't think they come this far north so no trying to figure out what it is. Gotta love the friendly juncos!

Thanks for all the comments! I will try the suggested crop, although it's the bend in the branch that I find interesting. My goal is to capture a male displaying, they are quite amazing. They have a crest that pops up, the wings spread and they almost vibrate as they sing. Rival males also do a cool ascending spiral that I'd love to get. Both pipe dreams most likely.
