Lovely colors, like the head up pose, curving perch, composition. Obviously not very bright, and I think you did well with this slow shutter speed.
A touch of fill flash would have given you a bit more flexibility in your settings.

Thanks for the comment and suggestion Randy. When I've used fill flash in the past the hummingbirds reaction was immediate which resulted in a blurred image due to movement.
Beautiful bird Jim and you got a great pose. I only wish for more DOF on the tail area. Nice clean bg too
Lovely image and HB, Jim. The perch and BG are super as is the pose on the bird. I consider 1/125 of a second more than adequate speed for this kind of image/situation.
It seems you have considered many aspects before taking the picture and got a good image. The colors on the bird look so real ! Like the composition and clean BG.

Jim, was this through a workshop?
Jim, really nice portrait of this little guy. I don't think fill-flash would have improved much here, but when I do use fill-flash with hummingbirds, I set the flash to second-curtain sync, which tends to solve the problem of subject movement.

No we got a cheap deal on an all inclusive 700 out of Toronto, last minute . We rented a car and did some day trips from the resort. This was up in Monteverde where we stayed overnight in the mountains. Couldn't pass up the deal as the flight alone can be close to that price.Quote:

The settings look fine to me, You would have had to really up the iso
to get much more DOF.
Beautiful colors as everyone has said. It is a "Gem" indeed. I'm wondering if it is not a full adult as the feathers seem a little incomplete.
