Tripod Canon 7D Canon 500mm f4 L IS &1.4Tc Mk1 ISO 320 1/1000 sec f5.6
This grebe was having a dispute with another pair, after much splashing and charging it all came to nothing the grebes just dived under water and re-emerged as if nothing had happened.
All C&C welcome.

Hi Jon, looks like he's doing the butterfly stroke in swimming, but well captured as is. He certainly looks determined, and your low angle works well. It seems like you got your monies worth on this outing. :w3

Jonathan,
Another great one! Great action captured in this one. Love the green/red/orange tones in the water.
I may have traded some ISO for SS on this one, although I'm not sure how much you would have needed to freeze the grebe.

Well caught Jonathan, lovely action shot. A bird I keep meaning to spend sometime with. I think we take them for granted sometimes, such pretty birds.
Cheers,
Carl.

Unfortunately the sharpness is not there in the image. I think the shutter speed was too low - need about 1/2000 to get the head sharp with good tracking. I like when the wings and feet are a bit blurry but here the head is blurred also. Certainly would be a lot of fun being there.

The head is indeed soft, which is too bad as the action, pose, and composition all look good.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, the head was indeed just a tad soft.

I like the action, but I definitely would have pushed the ISO to give yourself at least 1/2000.

Doug I agree had I noticed the shutter speed had fallen I would have raised the ISO, previous images were anywhere between 1/1600 to 1/2000, there must have been a cloud passing over and I had not noticed. My main preoccupation was to get images at lower ISO than last year where I got the best poses but inferior quality due to higher ISO.
