Willie Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys) v Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris)
I was shooting the Kite, when this tenacious little common flycatcher embarked on a series of sorties on the clearly annoyed larger bird...
Melbourne, Australia, a few weeks back, D800, 300 2.8, 1.7TC, f4.8, 1/2500, ISO360, EC -1/3.
Thanks, Greg.
Great capture Greg. Fantastic that you got both birds so sharp, not that easy as you know. The kite is great on its own as is the flycatcher. Not the best perch but the smooooth BG makes up for it. Awesome exposure and detail on both.
Only wish that the Kite looked like he was being attacked. Nice capture!

excellent dynamic shot and it's great to get both tack sharp in sweet light. This is a winner, the kite certainly looks alert.

Birds and moment are fab! I'll have to disagree wth the background, color is good, but flat and featureless, and approaching the cut and paste look. Would like to see original version for comparison.

Very nice, great getting them both sharp in the frame.

Hi Jim,
Absolutely nothing had been done to the BG (no blurring/cloning etc) - it's a field of dry grass - and probably because this was shot in very early light, the scene looks a little flat with no shadows,
Cheers Greg

I like the BG. Awesome behaviour image, great light, techs. Not the best perch, but the action trumps it...

Hi Greg, love the light in this, and great DOF to have both birds in perfect focus and nice and sharp too. Both well exposed, and that coloured BG is simply sweet.

Great action and nice soft light. Perch not ideal. love the boldness of the flycatcher coming in to tell the kite where to go.

A very striking image with a great BG. To see an action shot like this where both birds are as sharp as this is a pleasure.

Nice one Greg, and very impressed the Wagtail and Kite are equally as sharp especially considering how big the Wagtail looks against the much larger Kite. particularly with such a wide aperture of f4.8 I thought the dof would be much shallower with that much distance seperating the birds?

Thanks Phil - someone else remarked on the DOF on another forum as well - This is exactly as shot - not much at all done to it...
I was at least 10-15m away (its quite a sizeable crop), so the aperture is almost irrelevant. I just got lucky that both birds were on the same focal plane.
I checked the relative sizes of the birds and the wagtail (19-22cm) is basically half the size of a BSK (35-38cm). I think the outstretched wings of the wagtail make it appear larger in comparison, but that's what was shot...
Cheers,
Greg
