Good for you Joel! This is one of the better pileated images I have seen. The size and character of the perch really helps this image. Great exposure and sharpness on the WP and the BG turned out great. I think I see a very slight magenta cast on the bird and perch. I have never been able to get a decent shot of one of these, well done.

Joel,
That is a species worth waiting 4 years to capture.
Beautiful subject, nice perch and you couldn't ask for a better back ground.
I did a small crop, levels adjustment and warmed the image up.
What do you think?
When the light is dull / cool, I tend to add more light(exposure compensation) than I would in nice light and adjust the white balance.
Adjusting the white balance is so much easier than adding an 81A warming filter, you know back in the film days:bg3:. Attachment 127621

Joel:
Nice male pileated, good display of his grip, good shooting angle, a bit dark, and with a slight purple/magenta cast as mentioned.
I think that James repost is an improvement, but the blacks are a bit too washed out, so perhaps just a bit of contrast or black point adjustment to give them a bit more body.
Cheers
Randy

I'm envious. Saw one of these many years ago in Oregon, but no pictures. You did a great job when the opportunity presented. Congratulations!
