Like your idea about showing the environment. The stick and the vegetation on the left are overpowering the subject. Nice preening pose.
Maybe a tighter crop?

I like the idea and the branch, problem is bird is too small in the frame, maybe it would work better if you post larger. 800 pixel i just too small for this. there are some processing artifacts in the bright areas.
