Got this one this past fall. The adult bald eagles catch the fish and the juvies chase them and try to get the fish from them. In this image one juvie hit the adult who dropped the fish then this guy came in and almost caught it...the fish ended up back in the drink. Canon EOS 1DMK4, 600mm + 1.4 convertor , ISO 2000, f /6.3, SS 1/2000s.

A narrow escape for the fish indeed. I'll bet the fish was wiping his brow a bit after that one (assuming he had a brow and could sweat). Anyway, an incredible catch Nick. Beautiful dynamism and great sharpness, and good light to boot. Very well done and one to hang on the wall for sure!

Nick:
The action is fantastic! Great pose from the eagle. Nice BG.
The IQ is suffering from a lot of noise in the bird. How big of crop here? Was the original underexposed and then brought up in post? That might explain the noise.
Again, magical action.
Cheers
Randy

Hi Nick, excellent timing to capture this, especially in mid air. The placement works well, as does the vertical comp, and both against a killer BG. I do agree with Randy that the noise is quite evident on the underwings.

the action is superb but the IQ is unfortunately not there, the bird is very noisy.

This is very good action captured. Agree on the noise issue with the bird. Looks like a big crop here.

Great action Nick. The large crop hurt the IQ but thats what it took to make the image. Well done

Thanks guys. about 40% of the image cropped off. I think exposure was pretty good but will check. Anyone ever use NR on bird? It was used on BG.

Hi Nick,
Great action and story with it.
With respect to using NR on the bird, you really need to take a look at Arash's "Professional photographers' guide to noise reduction for EOS cameras". It takes you through the process. You will wish you had bought it sooner!

A truly amazing action shot, Nick. Great sharpness and details as well as excellent dynamic pose. There might be some noise in the dark wing feathers of the bird but not sure as I use my laptop right now.

Impressive is all i can say about this image
We as photographers try and get moments in wildlife that do have a WOW factor in it and we rarely get them, i really don't mind the IQ here
But i surely admire the WOW factor this image has
I would give you a standing ovation for this one, truly made my day seeing this image

Oh.... WOW! Incredible action capture! I would agree... the "bird" noise is pretty severe. Still, looks like a "once in a lifetime" shot!

Such a cool capture but sadly IQ definately suffered here on the bird. I hope you can get some good NR advice to correct it because the image has some great potential

Nice action captured, I take it this was a big crop with the noise in the image?
