Another one taken on Machias Seal Island. The puffin's call is often described as sounding like a chainsaw. I hope you're not getting tired of puffin shots (I have a ton).

Canon 7D
70-200 II @ 200mm
1/8000
f2.8 (should have stopped down more)
ISO 400
HH from blind, levels, curves, selective burning and dodging, cropped for comp and sharpened in CS5.

C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

Rachel

I don't think I have ever seen a puffin calling. Nice exposure and brilliant colors on the bill.

Hey Rachel, I like this image a lot—the blue sky, the rock perch, & the proud puffin that is very well exposed. I can almost feel the ocean environment. I am impressed with your PP skills. TFS.

Cool image, at 1/8000, you could have stopped down a lot more, but the Dof works, and the focus is really good!

A very cute shot and you must have been nice and close. I would only like a bit better light angle for the eye area. Very well exposed with whites and blacks.

Well I have never seen a Puffin.......the exposure and sharpness are spot on. The beak looks amazing.
I like the way it is sitting on the rock.

Lovely pose, comp and details, Rachel. Could have stopped down lots, but sharp where it counts. I remember seeing Machias Seal Island on a wildlife show on TV. It looked like the place had lots of opportunities, but the blind seemed a bit cramped from what I remember.
Would love to visit there some day.
Far from tired. Please keep them coming.

lovely image Rachel - well exposed against the blue, which is tricky for B&W plumaged birds
cool calling pose too...

if they sound like chainsaws I would imagine good earplugs are an essential for a puffin trip?? :Whoa!:

Thanks all for the kind comments. Morkel - fortunately they're not as loud as chainsaws even if they do sound like them. The sounds on the island are amazing though, including the patter of their feet on the roof of the blinds.
