Captured in a wooded canyon north of Malibu, California (Sycamore Canyon). Late afternoon light. Cropped for composition, but not rotated. The perch was horizontal, which is a little different.
7D, EF400mm f/5.6L
Manual mode, f/5.6@1/500 ISO 400 WB 5100K
AI Servo autofocus, hand-held no flash

Handheld at 1/500 is very impressive! Nice looking mocko too...

Very good feather detail and eye contact, bg and perch are fine as is contrast.

Jack, it's less impressive when I tell you that was a "copy and paste" mistake. The shutter speed was 1/2000. Oops! Dang, I can't edit my post now.

Super quality with great detail in the bird. Nice BKGR as well.
I might have cropped a little more off the right and bottom to move his eye off centre.
