5D III, 70-200mm IS II, f/3.2, ISO 1600, 1/1250. For some reason I love the "pancake" pose with Owls. HH from a kayak.

Colin, A terrific BG you've got here. blurred perfectly and still gives a great sense of the habitat. I am also liking the size and placement of the owl in the frame. The owl is a bit soft though.

Thanks! My monitor at the house is sharper than most, so it looked good to me. I should have sharpened more though, thanks!

I really like the BG. Gives a real feel to the environment. The water and tree position are perfect for this. Agree that the bird is a bit soft.
I love the darker colors in this shot and like the wing position as well.

hey Collin like the BG and cypress. nice flight head on but this one came out soft. There also a bit of magenta cast.

Colin:

Good comments above. I like this one better than the last, sense of environment is very good here.

I think the reason pancake owl shots work better than they do with most birds is their large, dominant heads act as anchors to the image. Most birds heads get overpowered by their wings in a head on pancake pose.

Agree about the slight softness.

Colin:

Nice job. It really makes the owl pop off the screen, very 3D effect! Our brains interpret sharper as closer, so it really does add to the depth of the image.

Cheers
