Solar Eclipse at Sunset in Colorado.

The May 20, 2012 annular solar eclipse from Colorado. Clouds covered the event but the sun pealed through the clouds occasionally. I hoped for some clouds, but got too many. Most of the event was not seen.

Canon 1D Mark IV, 300 mm f/2.8 L IS lens + 2x TC at ISO 400, 1/13 second, f/6.3 through an Orion reflective solar filter, mirror lockup on tripod.

Outstanding when you consider what you were up against. Worked out well. Nice job on this. The clouds add impact.

The clouds add a nice touch to your frame. We didn't have any clouds in ABQ.

the clouds add some great mood, Roger!
nicely pulled off with what little of it you were able to witness...

I am curious about the Orion reflective filter and its usage?

Hi Morkel,
See: (google search for): orion telescopes solar filter

My main complaint is it filters out too much and exposure times are 5x longer than I would like. They a designed for visual use and the are extra protective of your eyes, which is good. But the quality is high. One other issue is one can get reflections between the filter and front lens element, but I put mine on the lens hood and angle it just a tiny amount to reduce that problem.

Thanks for the info on that filter. love the overall image , maybe a tad 'soft' but could be the filter :)

Hi Andrew,

Not the filter, which is of very high quality. It was atmospheric turbulence. The sun was very close to the horizon looking through turbulent clouds and atmosphere. Plus, I didn't do any real sharpening.

Hi Roger, this looks great. I think the clouds really add to the overall composition.
