I have the Canon 500 F4 today so now begins a long period of learning. It is a daunting piece of equipment.

Congratulations John!! Good luck with that beautiful piece of glass.

Stephen- I've had the lens out for a couple of evenings and have quickly realised how nice it is. Of course you have the reach with the 500mm but the F4 combined with the IS really provide exposure flexibility.

Most people's dream lens...and now you have one yourself!! I have a couple of friends who own one of these and just looking at it you can tell how good a piece of equipment it is ;-)

coupled with a 1.4TC they are excellent for birds. I love mine :)

Yes Darren, I use the 1.4 tc a lot and see no degradation of IQ. Artie gets excellent results with the 2x tc as well and I have a theory that the oft-talked-about loss of IQ with this tc is all about photographer technique and not to do with glass.

Good luck with your 500 John. A 2x tc is not required for the type of shooting I do. I however have developed my own technique which I can almost guarantee is different then anyone elses. I would be comfortable with a 2x tc none the less. Happy shooting.

I have only seen it...;0, but if I had the money I'd go for the 600 f4, birds are anything but tame in CR!
