1D Mark IV, Canon 800 f5.6, 1/1600, f11, iso 500, laying on the ground with no tripod. (bad idea...)

These are Masked Plovers and they are quite aggressive birds - using the formidable spurs on their wings to intimidate and attack other birds. This pair were threatening another pair in what looked to me as an aggressive display which ended in a full on war. (happens too much to my right to allow photos.)

Great light quality and a nice story telling/behavioral aspect to the image.
Details are sharp!
The background control could be better, particularly in regards to the abrupt
dark area in the upper left corner of the image.....

Thanks for your comments guys! I agree with your comments regarding the BG. However, the older I get the less I tend to alter the images unless absolutely necessary.

Always nice to have 2 birds sharp in the frame. The spurs are very menacing. I am OK with the BG. My nit with this image is that the 2 birds seem disconnected from one another.They are looking at the ground as though they are daydreaming and not paying attention to each other. Of course the IQ and techs are excellent,

Good low angle, and a good view of their spurs. I like the overall comp and spacing of the two plovers, and both sharp.

In SA, all Plovers have been re-named Lapwings.

I generally don't like 2 birds without interaction.....so your explanation of the behavior......really negates that feeling for me and adds to the story. Tack sharp and the BG is fine for me too. Very nicely done!

I think this is fantastic. What stunning birds that look imposing and like they mean serious business. I have never seen or heard of these wing spurs, they are amazing. A haunting image. BG fine to me. Pretty much perfect.
