A wider view of one of the rhinos seen on my 2009 trip to South Africa.

Canon 50D
100-400 @ 100mm
1/125
f7.1
ISO 200
HH from safari vehicle, levels, curves, selective color adjustments and sharpened in CS5.

C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

Rachel

Rachel,

Excellent feel and great color tones. Hope you got more images of this guy with little more space around.

Rachel,

The tones here are wonderfully muted, I suppose you could not get wider than 100mm:S3:

The area under the chin looks a bit "odd" any ideas as to what it is, love the pet stick

Thanks Sid and Ken. Yes, lens was as wide as I could go. I have to look and see if there are any a little further away. Ken - not sure what you are referring to, the area under the chin is the dirt several feet behind the rhino, looks like there may be some twigs and footprints of some kind in that area.

Thanks again,
Rachel

Thanks for the explanation, I only raised it because it looks so different to the other BG. Entirely possible in most of Africa:w3

Hi Rachel, echo Sids reference, 'excellent feel and colour tones'. Like the side profile with just a slight head turn, the V shape branch is priceless as mentioned previously. Personally would have like a bit more room all round to give the Rhino room to breathe. Wonder is a hint more in Curves might just add something more to pulling/defining a hint more detail and or a little USM?

Did you apply any NR to the BKG, looks a little smudgy? :bg3:

Hi Steve - no NR, think it may just be the varying distances to the trees in the bg? Will take a look at whether I can extract more detail when have a few moments. Thanks,

Rachel

Lovely textures and detail. I would also like to see more space but I see you were at 100mm. Amazing how the colors of the soil give the nimal there color I like the suggestion of curves or maybe even levels to make it pop more..Very nice Rachel

I would welcome your thoughts Dumay, but I try to avoid Levels in this instance, as it can choke the blacks in darker areas, hence my change to Curves and how I have set it up, WDYT? Obviously personal I know. :S3:

Love the subdued tones here and the overall detail, Rachel.
No-one has mentioned it so I will...does it need some CW rotation?? Obviously tricky if you don't have the space to play with at the bottom...just thinking of getting all the feet on the same plane...though I assume there was some slope/undulation of the ground at play here as well? WDYT? :e3

Hi Rachel, I like the different colour tones on the rhino, as well as the detail, including the scratch marks. Nice angle shooting from a vehicle, and agree a little more space all round would have been tops.

Thanks Dumay, Steve, Morkel and Stuart. Morkel - I had also thought of straightening it but it made it even tighter so I decided to sacrifice the straightening for room. Here's a repost with another round of selective sharpening and a bit more contrast applied via a curves adjustment.

Thanks again,
Rachel

As others have noted, the muted tones/colors are very nice. I like the brushy BG. I also like close, profile images like this because of the opportunity to study the unique features of the animal.

Really nice sharp detail, Rachel. I like the tight crop because it shows the details!

Hey Rachel, I thought your OP was spot on, but seeing your repost, you have just taken it up a notch - the extra sharpening is just right. Well done. :w3

Cool, the hint more in some minor adjustments just pulls it all together, RP is a handsome and mighty fine image, might be one last thing you could try...:cheers:
