View Full Version : Owlet at ISO 6400

Taken this afternoon in dark woods under cloudy skies.
The chick was looking down at a sibling below (there are three of them)
NR on BG, none on the chick, removed a couple of branches and a 75% crop of in camera 1.2 crop.
The low light capability of this camera is remarkable for an amateur like me.

Pretty impressive. I'm surprised not to see noise in the eye. You're making me very impatient to get mine, though concerned that the feathers might trigger moire on the 800e. Everything I've seen indicates the Canon 5DIII performs as well, or maybe even a very small bit better, at high ISO. Of course, without the extremely high resolution :)

As for the owlet, that's pretty nice too. Looks to me as if the focus could have been brought forward a half inch or so to get more consistent focus on the body of the bird (the tail is in perfect focus). But that's hard to evaluate on these downy ones. It's really a lovely image. Makes me miss Oregon.

Wow, wonderful job at that ISO, Dan. Can't believe you didn't have to do any NR on the chick. I like the eye contact and the soft light. Might clone out the thin stick crossing behind the head but that is a minor thing.

Very impressive for such a high ISO. I like the pose and the vertical. Agree with Melissa on cloning out the branch that cuts through his head. I like the belly showing the downy feathers and the " big bird" feathers,

looks good although NR is yet not optimized in your process, shoot me the NEF file and I'll show you what this camera can do ;)

Arash, if I can figure out a way to send you a 32mb file, I would love to.
My email won't do that. If I compress it defeats the purpose.
I am in awe of the D800 so far.
Base ISO is 800 for me. No noise at all.
1600 looks good, just a bit of NR required at that iso.

From the samples I have seen it should handle all the way up to 12,800 :Whoa!:
