American Robin (for Nikon people)

Nothing special, first day with the new D800.
a Robin in the woods at iso1600.
I have never used anything close to that high iso and the quality looks pretty good to me.
A 60% crop of in camera 1.2 crop.
The D800 lets you choose Full frame FX, 1.2 crop, 1.5 DX crop or 4x5 crop.
You can change the crop at will.
I did regular PP on this, NR on BG and some sharpening on the Robin, nothing else.
Color etc., is out of camera.
I still don't even know what half the features are.
I realize not great comp or anything, just thought I would show what the D800 looks like
in a snapshot.

Yikes! iso1600 looks pretty spiffy to me! I used to be a Nikon person. When I switched I feared I'd lose my soul. Nice IQ here, many thanks for sharing!

Dan, Really looks good, talk about envy! I want one of those D800's but did not know you could actually get one yet. Guess I will have to save my money and get one when the backlog of orders is gone.

Dan, fabulous detail. When you use one of the crop modes does it increase the frames per second?

Laurie, I put my name in 2 months ago. The first batch came out last week but I didn't get one until yesterday.
I am still not sure I will keep it, Pro Photo here is giving me 2 weeks and I can return it if I want.
I was pretty happy with a few shots today, but still want to take a few more.
Roy, the FPS is 5 in DX but only 4 in other modes without a grip.
It is not a deal breaker for me, low light capability is what I am looking for.
So far, so good, I took a bunch of shots today at 1600 and they all looked like this Robin photo.
I cropped it tight to show the noise and detail.
I think being able to change crops at will is pretty nice although it is basically the same as cropping
after the fact.

Dan, that's a very impressive image all around at that much crop. I ordered a D800E (without AA filter) February 8, but will be lucky to get mine by May, so I'm very envious indeed. Will sell my D700 and D7000 to pay for it, since it easily replaces both and then some. I'm planning on using that 1.2 crop a lot. Thanks for sharing the early shot. Was that auto WB? Looks a tad cool to me. Have you tried the Auto 2 (warmer)?

Ron, Auto WB, I use neutral setting for picture control (same as D7000), camera sharpness at 6, everything else pretty much factory settings, AF -C, 51 point AF, but 21point focus.
I have not even skimmed the surface. I like that shooting modes are set electronically, no accidentally turning the wheel.
Iso, WB, are set by buttons.
The view is full frame, a window shows up for whatever crop mode you set.
This is probably going to take time to get used to but I mostly plan on shooting in 1.2 crop, the files at 14 bit are "only"
32 mb. FX mode are 50 mb for simple bird telephoto shots, not the 80 I was expecting.
They are working fine on my 3 year old MAC with only 2gb of RAM.

I'm very interested in this camera as well, however it is not yet available where I live and it will be a long queue once it become available. Is it possible for you to show the 100% crop on part of the image? Also how you like the autofocus?

The image looks clean with good sharpness and very nice details especially in the black.
