This was at one of my setups. D700, 300mm f2.8, 1.4tc, tripod. Cropped. 1/1640, f7.1, iso400. Very small exp. adjustment in acr. Removed a couple elements from the perch, USM in CS3.

The Cardinal is exposed perfectly Jack and the detail and focus is really good.
As far as the setup, I think, a simple branch perch might be nicer, the oof
lichen in front takes my eye off the bird.
The BG is very nice as usual and does really complement the bird.

Terrific sharpness, pose and bg. I just love it. I'd give it just a tiny bit more room around.
I don't have much experience with setups, but I imagine placing the perch parallel to the camera sensor would be my M.O, especially if the perch has such nice lichens.

this is great, I love the light and details great quality. Sidharth makes good comments regarding having perch parallel to the back of the camera if possible but this is great as is

Beautiful details, and I like the background (perfect "theme" image). I too would give the comp a bit more room. There is what looks like a bit of blotching in the BG at the tip of the tail...perhaps from the removal of one of the elements.

Lovely shot of the bird, I agree it is a little large in the the frame, I would be inclined to place the about 20 degree off parallel to the camera sensor and also a little further away, this would cure the size in the frame and provide a slightly better view of the perch which I think would then be a little more aesthetically pleasing. Beautiful detail in the bird - is that you I can see in the pupil?

Thanks everyone, I was reluctant to post this because of the perch. Daniel that is sloppy clone work by the tail. Jonathan I was in a blind, that is not me in the birds'eye.

I love it Jack and I think whether one likes the lichens or not is a matter of taste.
I've noted some of us like very simple backgrounds or habitats, others like more of the habitat.
Don't know why you would have hesitated, i wouldn't have.
