Another from our 2 weeks in heaven (Florida). Seems so long ago now!

We found the Jays at Merrit to be rather interested in what I was doing lying in the grass!

D300 + Sig 500 4.5
1/125s @ F6.7
iso 200
Slight crop losing left. Leg rings removed.

I like everything but the crop. The blues on the bird are very nice and I like the alert pose. I may go vertical or have more room to the right - if you have it. Interesting shape to the tip of the beak.

Man, that tip looks like a shrike's! Nice image, Stuart. Great alert pose, sharpness and colors. I would add more room to the right here too.

Thanks for the feedback. No more room on the right, pretty much full frame apart from the crop to the left.

Tom/Melissa, I was wondering why you think it may be better to have more room no the right on this image? Always helps with future compositions.

More than an issue of the room to the right, I think for me it's just that my eye is just so used to the standard ratio that I am not a fan of squarish crops. But of course that is a highly personal thing.

Thanks Melissa. I'm a printer by trade so no probs with 6x4, 10x8 or square crops, what ever fits the image. Understand where you're coming from and appreciate the reply.

Very sharp detail on this one - angle is great too - you must have gotten down pretty low.

I might crop a bit differently - either more room on each side for horizontal, or just go straight vertical. For colors I might adjust the blacks (upward) just a bit to subtly bring out a bit more contrast, and darken the blue in the feathers.
