A large female trying to scare off a juvenile for the rights to the best fishing grounds.
Shot at Katmai NP. Overcast day.
Canon 7D, Av, f/6.3, ISO 640, @ 1/250 s.

Am not sure about the composition crop on this picture. The bear was pretty much in the center of the frame as I was shooting another one and this one just popped up from nowhere and gave a small window of action. Would be good to hear what you all think.

Shreyas,

Unless people might require more space at the bottom for "virtual legs", the crop is for me perfect.

On my monitor the image has a slight magenta cast most noticably in the darker fur.

I think that a boost in contrast and a tad more sharpening for web presentation might help.

All in all one of the best Bear images I have seen in some time, because it is different.:cheers:

Here is a repost, let me know what you think, perhaps a little too dark?

Sheryas - the crop works and the water running off the bear really adds to this. I'm guessing this bear had some red in her fur. Maybe somewhere in between the OP and Ken's repost. I see a cyan/green tint to the hillside behind the bear in his repost. I agree on the additional sharpening.

Rachel

Rachel,

Ooops I dis not really notice the effect on the background, too much concentration on the subject itself I am afraid to say.

Shreyas,

Rachel nailed my comments on the repost. A bit of red in the fur is attractive IMO.

Thanks all for the input.

@Ken and Rachel, I sharpened the Bear a bit more and de-saturated a tad bit (-11) the magenta + reds on the bear. Wdyt?

Shreyas,

The repost looks great too me, but I am not an expert in Bear colours, whatever it is still a wonderful pose.

Hi Shreyas, based on the OP a reduction of the Red channel and destaurating the Blue in saturation gets the image to where it needs to be. The additional sharpening in your repost is better, but you need to be careful you don't over do it in situations like this. Crop & the position of the bear looks good too.

When posting it is always best to give your image an sRGB profile as it will display them at their best, therefore you might like to check these two links out for future postings.

I think the choice of crop/comp was a good one for the stance of this bear and I really like the BG. Gives a nice sense of habitat.
