Finally some clear skies today. I wanted to take advantage of the nice light and low tide so I waded out to the little blue herons but couldn't get close enough when someone came out with there dogs and POOF all the birds gone.(Don't you just love when they do that???) So I headed back out wader boots sticking in the muck and out of nowhere came this great blue right in front of me. He was so close and i was hesitant about removing the 2x in the water so I shot some portraits. He caught this needlefish seconds later and I got the shot. I feel it could use more space but it is full frame and I'm not gonna mess with it. Keeps attention on the catch.I am starting to get more comfortable with manual exposure as well

Sweet Cheryl. It sure does put focus where you want it. Great detail, exposure. I wonder about a small cw rotation.

Very nice! The tight crop works well IMHO as I can see the head of this tiny pipefish. A bit on the cool and bright side.

This is awesome Cheryl. Love the curvy lines that the needlefish introduces into the image and the body line of the fish that is parallel to the crest feather. Tack sharp and good BG,

Wowee, love this cool prey shot, Cheryl. Having it twist around the bill is just too awesome. Great close portrait, details, and agree with Ofer it might help to lessen brightness a tad and warm it up.

Wonderful shot. You handled the situation very well and came out with a beautiful portrait. Excellent detail, I really like the background, and great comp. Looking at the fish and if this was in saltwater that looks more like a pipefish part of the seahorse family.
Well done.

Very cool catch!! You made the best of it, and I too am OK with the tight comp for this one. I don't know what the background was like beyond the frame but I wonder if you would have had the time to crouch down to get an all grey BG, or go higher (if you were already bent down) to get an all green one? I just find the split distracting to me (not an image killer, just being honest in my thoughts). I also wish the head was angled a wee bit more towards us. Still an amazing image, the coiled prey is over the top!!

Cheryl, its tight but you did not clip the crest feather... good quick work in the field. loved that prey...so unique. Manual exposure was a good call and well done. in Av, if not careful with compensation, then this is the typical situation in which whites get blown.

Ahhh Daniel , my thoughts exactly the moment I saw the frames " why didn't I scootch up a bit to remove the great sand shoreline." I think I was so involved in watching the catch that I never even noticed ... Darn. Nice obsertvation and I agree totally.
