From late December, Boundary Bay and either just before sunrise or very close to it. I added to bottom and left and cropped from top and right.
7D, 500mm, 1/250, f/4, Av, ISO800, Tripod.

This is a really nice shot. There is a fair bit of wing blur but I like it because the face is tack sharp.Good sense of motion here. Was your SS only 1/250? Pretty amazing to get the bird sharp at that speed.The pink in the BG sky really enhances this image as well. Good work with the PP. No nits from me:S3:

Thanks Gail. Yes 1/250. It was very early and I was fooling around and really surprised that I had two out of three or four that turned out sharp on the face. Lucky day or lucky Dave but either way I was pleased.

Love the sky color so much here, Dave. I like the sense of motion implied by the wing blur. Great comp too. Nicely done.

Pretty awesome Dave. You must've panned perfectly to get the face, body and tail sharp. The wing blur adds to this image imo. I love the bg and light. Excellent image.

Very pretty, Dave. Love the pastel sky. Did you do anything to the eye? It looks unnaturally bright to me.

Very sweet colours in the background Dave. Nice detail on the sharp part. I would prefer less wing blur but still think it's a great shot.

Very nice shot, lovely detail, I too was a little uncertain about the eye, it appears to have a very high contrast indeed (??)

Hi Dave, sweet light, and I like the flying pose. Sharp where it counts, well exposed, and just love the hint of pink in the sky. You have done extremely well for a ss of 1/250

Grace and Jonathon I did go back and have a look at the unchanged RAW file and not really noticeable change in the eye, although I did do a small UM mask on it. Owl was directly down stream of the available light and perhaps the bluish tones of the photo make the yellow eye pop a bit more.

Dave, stunning shot. so many things to like here. I liked the wings blur....that purple band in the BG behind the owl...how cool is that? whites, details, the eye, comp...well done.
