Taken in my back yard using a feeder and hide, near sundown using flash as main light gave a nearly black BG on this one. Kinda different, do you like it or not?

1D MKIV

Tripod
Manual mode
Evaluative metering
Center AF point manually selected and rear focus
ISO 1600

Removed the flash catchlight and minimal bill clean up.

Joel,

This is a real strong picture, a unique original shot - very well done!

IMO when photographing birds you must find a different perspective, your own voice. Otherwise they tend to all look alike. I do like all bird photos but to stand apart this is type of composition/subject placement needed. I believe all photographers want their work to be seem and appreciated you up the chances for both to happen with work like this - very nice Joel

Nice image Joel - the super clean background lets the bird really pop. Looks as if you got him hoisting himself up--cool pose.

Joel,

Greetings. I like it. A little bright for my taste, might consider toning down a bit particularly the perch. Otherwise, good show!

Cheers,

hey Joel, love it, especially catching that flash of red right at the edge of his head.

I had not notice the "flash as main light" until I read it.

My only attempts with flash as main light were horrible. I don't know how you did it, but the result is awesome.
