I'm picking up a Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM (http://www.flickr.com/photos/alabang/tags/canonef400mmf28lisiiusm/) tomorrow and was wondering which replacement lens foot to get.

What I want is the ability to use the replacement as a handle and the camera to remain in balance on a Whimberly head.

Optionally it should work great on a Mongoose 3.6 if I decide to upgrade.

My shortlist on lens foot are the following.

Kirk LP-55
RRS LCF-53
Wimberley AP-602
4th Generation Design CP-40

Incidentally I wrote a review on the 400mm at http://gearpill.com/elite-review-canons-updated-400mm-f2-8l-is-ii-usm/

Being able to test the 400mm three months ago made me place an order. It is the best lens I have ever used.

I purchased the RRS foot and it works fine.

Tested the 400 with the Wimberley P-50 and found it short towards the lens mount without the 2x extender and hazardously short with the 2x and 1D4.

I guess this also applies with the Kirk LP-55, Wimberley AP-602 and 4th Generation Design CP-40 as they do not have enough plate area to clamp upon and yet maintain balance. This gets worse when you attach a 580EX II.
