Another from one of our snowy days in Homer. Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens with the 1.4X II TC and the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering + 2 2/3 stops: 1/60 sec. at f/11 set manually.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Artie:

I like the somber tone, snow in the air, composition, sharpness.

Wish I could see a bit more of legs/feet, but a challenge sometimes.

Do I detect a little detail extraction on the feathers?

Cheers

Randy

The snow and the bird are really done.
I also don't like the cutoff legs and the snow FG in general.
The focus and IQ are great as usual.

Artie, I like the setting here, and any image that portrays snow is a winner in my books. I just love your Bald eagles, impressive looking birds.

Very nicely composed, Artie! Like the space you gave it, great mood, that neutral gray BG really sets off the eagle & snow so well! The 1/60 speed just right to capture the action of the falling snow. Agree, feet would be nice, and FG snow might look better with a darker border of some sort. I think the OOF snow in FG helps to transport viewer into the wintery scene a bit too. Nice work, have to check out your blog now.

I like this. Great mood, eye contact, exposure looks spot on. Agree about the legs but still a keeper for sure. I like the composition too....:w3

Snow is nice if you can leave it behind you after a week:bg3: Like the mood here, the falling snow has a nice sense of movement at 1/60. One thing you gotta love above winter shooting is it sure helps bounce light back up onto the subjects belly. Great job, sharp and love the intense look in the eye. Looks like your IPT was another success.

Gary.

Wonderful, I love how you composed this.

Thanks Grace. With small in the frame, the corners can be very effective.

Thanks all for your kind words. Any suggestions on how to include the legs and feet while the bird is standing well above you in an inch of snow :e3?

Gorgeous foot shot! And love the original post. Great composition and balance in this. I don't mind the feet cut off. A border I think would help too as it took me a while to figure out how thick the snow section was. Thanks for sharing this.

Great shot the way it is! I will not talk about the hidden legs/feet, 'cuz as you said, the Eagle is standing on thick snow. I would wonder how you could see the feet at that angle.

Love the snow and the comp - placing the bird in the corner works well. Possible theme for next month - feet.

Thanks all for your more than kind words. I should have mentioned that to get the bird in the corner I used central sensor (by necessity) AI Servo/Rear Focus AF and recompose.

ps: I like it too :S3:.

I agree with the low ss to blur the snow and disagree with the foot fans. In that setting I actually WANT the feet/legs sunk in the snow. Next time it snows here in St. Augustine I'm going out looking for an eagle!
