I splurged on some new tulip bulbs this fall (so I have some new flowers to shoot come spring!) I thought they looked really organic as is so I put them on a flat black BG and tried a few different combinations to see what came of them. I liked this one best.

Canon 40D, EF 50mm f/1.4
f 7/1 @ 1/125, ISO 400
Handheld, natural light (shot outdoors), evaluative metering
Processed in ACR/CS5 & tonal contrast added in Color Efex Pro 4

Hi Jules. I really like this - your image has a very professional studio look! Beautiful light, nice colors, excellent comp, good overall sharpness, and the black background works very well. You might try toning down some of the whites just a bit, but this is very well done!!

Thanks, Steve. I was going for a "studio" look so its nice to see that's the process you thought of. I will go back and take another look at the whites. :w3

Nicely done, Jules, and something different too. I can see you doing a series on these, documenting step-by-step their development.

Nice job of trying something different! I doubt if I would have taken a second look at a subject like this but you came up with something really interesting. :S3:
I think the whites of the inner bulbs look good but I would consider toning down some of the reflections on the skins.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I was thinking the same thing, Ken...that the reflections were a bit glaring.

Very simple but pleasing composition Jules! Definately something I could see hanging on my wall. Looking forward to your tulip shots next spring!
