This picture of a Kea was taken on Jpeg and IMO the post to my gallery was a reasonable image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianrmc/2382330984/sizes/o/
Unfortunately when edited with PSE 5 to get within the 150 kb limit using Save for Web to GIF to Jpeg and sharpened very slightly the image is no longer acceptable to me.
What did I do wrong please?
Here is the GIF/ Jpeg edit.

Why did you have a gif in the middle? There is no need . . . Stay tuned.

I used Save as instead of Save For Web with a quality setting of 9. (Starting with the flickr image)

You might have to list all the steps in your work flow to help figure out where things went wrong.

Thanks Jim
Unfortunately with PSE 5 I don't think there is a quality setting option in Save.
The original edit as I recall followed Artie's usual formula except that as the Curves settings did nothing for the image there was no curves adjustment.
The reason I went the GIF way was to get the kilobytes down.
It worked before in a previous post to BPN:http://www.birdphotographers.net/forums/showthread.php?t=8020

It has been a while since I used PSE. When you do Save As (from Tiff to JPG) there is no option for the amount of compression?

Did you sharpen the whole image rather than just the bird?
Did you sharpen before or after resize?

I may have to load up PSE just so I can figure out how to help folks. . .

The best tool I found for saving compressed jpeg files to a specific size, etc is ProJPEG.
I have been using the Boxtop software plug-in for years.

the GIF save reduced the image to 256 color
Here is a link to the resize for web explained by Fabs

also in Elements, if you are working a tif and do "save as" jpg, just select the jpg and the compression option window will come up next....same as photoshop

Sharpening of the BG will bring out the noise as well as any other "defects." Looks like you do have an option for how much compression in PSE too.
