I have some unexpected time off in November at the time of the Crane Festival in Bosque. My long lens is my 400/5.6 -- Is it a waste of time to go without something longer?

No thoughts on this from you experienced Bosque folks? I'd hate to drive the 7 hours to find that my 400 just won't cut it. Thanks.

That is long enough for the morning blastoffs and afternoon landings, especially if you have a ex body..

Thanks, Allan. Yes, I'm using it with a 7D. I'm still not sure if I'm going to be able to go, but think it's going to happen.

It will be fine for the cranes. You probably won't get close enough for close shots of the geese, but can get group shots. There is also the duck pond at NM Tech and Gambel's quail at the Bosque visitor center. The 400 should be OK for those spots.

Just a followup ...

I went with my 400 and had a wonderful time. Sure a 500 (or a 600 ... or an 800 ... or an ... ) would have been nice for some images, but the 400 on my 7D kept me very happy. The Bosque is an amazing place.
