This worn juvenile Piping Plover was photographed at Nickerson while I was sitting in the shallow surf photographing Sanderlings. Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens with the 1.4X III TC and the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop: 1/1000 sec. at f/10 set manually.

Amazing that the sun seemed so high at 8:32 am on 8/24/11. Sunrise was at about 6:10am or so.

Central sensor (by necessity) AI Servo/Rear Focus AF. Lens/TC/body micro-adjustment: 0.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Forgot to mention: a bit of beach and bill clean-up.

Beautiful, these guys are so small and very difficult to photograph. We usually view these guys from the top down, when viewing image with low angle like this it makes me feel like I am there with the subject! There's something intimate about viewing the subject at eye level.

Cute little feller. I love these guys. Great HA, of course, and low shooting angle. I've also been amazed how quickly the sun climbs to a steep angle, but it doesn't seem to hurt this image, since you had the sun at your back. Very lovely.

Love the pose with this little head turn and feather details. Yes, the beach looks perfectly clean.
Despite the shadow, the light looks nice and soft.

Lovely HA, Artie! I had to click on this to see what a PIPL was? **** banding codes! I normally look at "What's new" which doesn't show the thumbnails:e3

Hey Dan, Thanks. Not really bander's codes any more. Orinthologist's codes would be more accurate. There is a nice article here (http://www.birdpop.org/alphacodes.htm) and you can find a pretty comprehensive list here (http://www.birdpop.org/DownloadDocuments/Alpha_codes_english.pdf).

Artie, Thanks for the link. Nice low angle, sharp and well exposed. The shadow adds interest and the beach is amazingly clean.

YAW Lady D. The beach was pretty clean to begin with. The bill was not :). Here is the ORIG.

Whoops, I didn't mean to imply that you did major clean up. I was thinking that sometimes at Nickerson you get lucky with this fresh looking sand.:S3:

I made no inference; just wanted to share. And that bill was a mess. But I did leave some sand on it.

Glad you left a little sand on the bill - it looks good.:S3:

Sharpness, detail, shooting angle, pose and exposure look perfect to me! In fact all the images you've showed in here taken with the 800 inspired me to buy a Canon 800 f5.6...!!!:bg3:
Bought it on eBay and while doing so my account was charged twice.......:Whoa!: So my financial situation right now is a bit worrying.
However I am sure I will be happy when I get the lens.
BIG THANK YOU Artie!!

Very nice image. HA is awesome and I like the simplicity of the image. No distractions so the eye really looks at only the bird. Light is fine to me. Low angle is great,
Gail

These are one of the sweetest looking birds imo and you've done him proud with that cute pose. The good morning light disappears so fast, doesn't it?

Nice clarity, pose and BGD looks great. I can't recall seeing Nickerson's so clean. :bg3: I must have started too late in the season, mid June.

Thanks and yes. That's why I am so careful about working right down sun angle. :S3:

Pretty simple image but really nice. The detail on the bird is great and I like the textured sparkly sand too.
