Hi, Been practising with my new macro lens. Hopefully getting to grips with it now. Comments and advise would really be appreciated.

Thanks, Simon

Simon, I'd say you've done a pretty good job of coming to terms with that lens! Good detail, good color, I really like the diagonal lines beneath the fly...it might be nice to see a little more room on the LHS and a little more room on the top, but that's a matter of taste. Nicely done!

I have to correct myself. This is infact a Flesh Fly and not a Horse Fly. :S3:

I agree it's a flesh fly - I know from experience -grey stripy jobs- they sneak up on you and bite before you even feel them land and then the next day you get big itchy wheels (is that how you spell it?) that last for days!!
Excellent focus and exposure you have good detail in the dark areas as well as the lighter ones. I don't know if you used a tripod or flash or what aperture - it is a good idea to post the techs .

Hi Simon and welcome to the Macro forum! As John mentions above, please post your shooting specs (e.g., camera, lens, ss, f/stop, ISO, flash - or not, hh or tripod) as this will help us make more informed comments and suggestions on your photos. For example, I would like to see a little more DOF in a photo like this, but without knowing your specs it is difficult to suggest how to improve it. :S3: I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks for your comments. Apologies for not posting the camera specs etc. Must admit, that's one of the things I like about this forum. Anyway, here are the settings used for the shot above.

Canon 7D, sigma 105mm lens
Shutter speed - 1/60
Iso 100
Aperture F11
in built flash
Hand held

Would be very interested to know how to increase the DOF other than altering the aperture. Again, thanks for the comments and any tips for improvement would be great.

Thanks

Simon

Simon: Thanks for posting the specs. Of course, one way to increase DOF is to increase the f/stop (as you already know). Raising your ISO to 200 would have allowed you to shoot at f/16 for a little more depth. Another way to increase DOF is to simply back away from your subject a little. This gives you a smaller-in-the-frame subject, but with increased DOF. With a 7D you can do a fair amount of cropping (especially for web presentation) to get your large-in-the-frame final image and still have excellent results.

The built-in flash on these cameras will not be your best bet for macro work. I think you will achieve better results using an off-camera flash in conjunction with a diffuser.

I like everything about the image: the details, the SH, and the image design. Jon, I think you were looking for this:

welt (plural welts (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/welts#English))

A raised mark on the body caused by a blow; a wheal (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/wheal) or weal (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/weal).

I never know that the two in blue were synonyms for "welt" which is what I went looking for!
