On the morning of September 11, 2001, I started work early, setting about the task of planting 40 Leyland Cypress trees along our driveway. After planting about 10 of the trees, I took a coffee break and turned on the television to catch up on the news. It was then that I learned one of the World Trade Center buildings in New York City was on fire. And as events on that day unfolded, I joined millions of other Americans in shock and disbelief.
My reaction to that kind of stress is to do something physical. So I decided to finish my planting. Today, those once little trees tower above us. And each time I see them I think of that fateful day in 2001. Those trees truly are our 911 memorial.
