Here's another frame from my hummingbird shoot this weekend. I particularly like the feather detail in the fanned tail.

Beautiful pose, exceptional detail. Lighting is wonderful -- it avoids that flat look that I often associate with flash images.

The fanned tail is real bonus, Doug, very nice.
f18? You must have quite a flash setup.

Perfect in all ways. Looks like you really enjoy the 70-300L lens. Wonder how you position the flashes to get a result so amazing. Thank you for sharing this beauty.

WOW. That pops Doug, well done.
How were the four flashes used? I would guess at one on the background and the rest on the subject. The modelling is very good so maybe you backlit the bird as well as adding directional lighting from the front ?
Thanks for any clues... as it works very well.
Cheers

Wow, really nice!! Just a bit big in the frame for me, but the detail is put much more in evidence this way (the tail is superb):S3:

That is some amazing feather detail. Nice flash work as well. I am too lazy to get into all that but it sure seems to pay off.

Sharp city, a bit bright, love the mini-gorget. A bit too big in the frame for me. Right on with the flash work.

Love the irridescent green on the tail feathers and the red throat. Amazed at the sharpness here.

Now you are just showing off.:w3:w3 Great choice of f stop, as you have covered the DOF perfectly. Tack sharp, and yes, whats there not to like on the fanned tail feathers. Congrats on another fine HB image Doug.

I'm glad you like the photo Austin. I used one flash on the BG and the remaining 3 on the bird. One above and behind the bird, one at eye level and in front of the bird, and one in front of and above the bird.
