First BIF with the 7D!

These Black -tailed took to the air as a Sparrowhawk made a pass (100+) and I just managed a quick capture as they balled up and spun around.
This cropped from a larger number, quite pleased with the resulf

AND MANUAL FOCUS! and the 1.4 converter on 100-400 at full stretch!

Richard:

Great collection of poses here. They are angled away, but it goes with your story of the sparrow hawk.

I am seeing a halo around most of the birds, either from sharpening or S/H work.

From a comp standpoint, I might consider adding a bit more canvas to the right.

Sounds like you are having fun! Which is the whole point of it all anyway:bg3:

Cheers

Hmm, I hate S&H

reworked without, halo gone I think
recrpped more on right, added some to bottom to balance

Yep, hours of fun lol (and frustration)

The repost is much better - worth the extra work. The shapes and colors are great, all a little different but belong together.

The repost works better for me. Good job.

Fantastic capture. I had four sharp flight images with manual focus out of about 20,000 tries... Love the top views.

What a beautiful shot, Richard! Good on ya for manual focusing this, I can't even imagine how you did it. Really a superb shot. Great choice on the crop/comp (and don't tell me you shot this as a vertical!)

Not shot as vertical Melissa , I'll take that one tomorrow lol
Probably nabbed it with shear determination; I have had endless let downs using the TC on A1 Servo with my 40D, so taday I said right, I'm going to use manual on the 7D.
I was shooting the odd moorhen etc and knew the Godwits were in the next field. Suddenly a Sparrowhawk went for them . I unclipped from tripod focussed almost immediately and fired .
Whats interesting is I knew I had them , the 7D view finder is so bright and clear. Of course lens speed is not the same issue as it is on auto.
Now, like the English Cricket team I just have to do it again :Whoa!:
