I'm putting this one up for my 12-year-old granddaughter, Lia Caldwell. She was visiting last week, and she and I spent half a day at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, an hour and a half north of here. I put the beanbag on her window and turned over the D7000 with 200-400 f/4 and 1.7 TC (pretty heavy for her). She told me when and where to stop, and she shot the pictures. We chased this guy down the beach for 30 yards or so. I liked this pose, and she nailed the focus. Not much PP, but a little crop and removed a few sticks in front of the bird. Left leg apparently hidden behind the wing. Would you do more in post for this?

f/6.7, 1/400, ISO 360 (Aperture priority +1 EV), distance 15 m

Ron,
You have a budding photographer in the making! A great shot for any aged photographer. I think the PP is just fine. I might be tempted to take the messy branches on the right out,

Good for her! I think that she did quite well. Image is real sharp, she caught a great pose and the comp looks fine. Very nice.

Gail and Jack, thanks for the kind comments. Very few 12-year-olds would think Sunday with Grandpa and the Bighting Bugs a good time, but I think she enjoyed herself thoroughly, and got some good captures along the way.

Loved the pose. Convey that to your granddaughter. eye contact would have been nice but you dont always get it with such poses. exposure and sharpness are excellent. I think PP is fine. I might take some off the top.
