Hi Carel. This is another outstanding image! This fly is an excellent wasp mimic! I like everything about this image - light, pose, sharpness, perch, comp, and background. If this was mine, I wouldn't change a thing. Very well done! :cheers::cheers:

Cool subject, very good pose and well composed. Flower looks good and a perfect BG. Good details on the head/eyes but I like a lot the wings. Very well done.

Carel - After looking through my insect guide, I think this is one of the thick-headed flies (family Conopidae, possibly Physocephala spp.). These are mostly parasites of solitary bees and sometimes wasps. The female fly attacks a host species in midair, often forcing it to the ground, and rams an egg between the host's abdominal segments before releasing it.
