The image, which features a Great Blue Heron eating a baby Marine Iguana, was created at Punta Espinoza, Fernandina Island with the the tripod-mounted Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens, the 1.4X III TC, and the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering at zero: 1/1600 sec. at f/8 in Av mode. Lens/TC/Camera Body Micro-Adjustment: +10.

For the whole story--my guide is a genius--check out the lead image in BAA Bulletin #378 (http://www.birdsasart.com/2011/07/22/birds-as-art-bulletin-378/). For a great lesson on removing color casts, check out "Dealing With the Blues (http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/2011/07/23/dealing-with-the-blues/)."

As for the image, don't be shy; all comments welcome.

After reading the blog I know why the tail is missing in frame... :S3:

Love the way that little prey is holding the beak as it try to slip out...Wonderful job on Blue cast...

Artie,

Cool shot even with the unorthodox crop.

Wow the yellow eye about popped out in my lap :t3:t3:t3

Detail galore... Is that the tongue hanging out on the Iguana? I'm sure we will be blessed with the "downing it" image soon
Nice timing Artie, makes for a great image.

For me the bit that counts is there - I love the foot overhanging the lower part of the beak.

I would have had a whole field of cows!!

Hey Artie, I can see why you are over the moon getting the shot after explaining the circumstances. Excellent detail, sharp, and the catch puts this over the top.

Great job on capturing the moment and great job on getting rid of the blue cast on the bird, Artie.
I Like the composition and the way the poor guy hangs on to the lower mandible.

The action and behavioral moment are absolutely killer. For me a wider (with the entire bird visible) or tighter (homing in on the action even more) crop would have been the icing on the cake. Excellent shot nonetheless, TFS

The action is interesting and detail great. However, I find the cutting of the tail and the legs to be bothersome. Either a crop forward of the legs of the heron or a looser composition which includes the tail and fee would be much better IMO. TFS

great I love the prey, sharp and nice light. I wish the whole bird was in the frame but I guess you did not have time to take off the TC.

The action makes up for the unotrthodox crop . The drops of water on the tail and legs of the lizard add to the image . I would tone down the light spots / reflection patches ?? just below the lizard .
