Cottle Lake Tanager

Hi Everyone,
Managed to get a bit closer with the Western Tanagers here in Nanaimo B.C. down at Cottle Lake. I got a new iPod Touch for my Birthday last week and used Tanager song on iBird to call this guy in.

Stats: Canon 50D, 500mm with 1.4X, 1/200sec at F/8 in manual mode, Flash set to -1.33

Excellent pose, detail, and exposure!

Would like to see the bird a bit more to the left and/or a bit more room on the right.
A touch of fill flash may have also worked well here.
Don't mind the somewhat busy BG as it adds a touch of habitat but the one OOF leaf obscuring the perch is unfortunate.

Hi Mike and Richard,
I did use a flash at - 1.33 stops. If you look close you can see a bit of sparkle on the beek. This was actually one of two images that I considered posting. Most of the criteria you mentioned should be addressed in the second one. The first post is meant to be more of an environmental shot.

This one ISO 800, 1/100sec at F/8 - same camera same lens.

I like both images Steve but prefer the second. The food in the beak is great as is the pose and the bg.

I like them, both. A beautiful bird. The second one, has great eye contact, and you gotta love the food in the beak.
