When transferring video clips to a DVD or external hard drive for safe keeping, do I need to save the original .MOV format? Or is the converted .mpeg4, all I need to save. I use a 7D, and will mostly take short clips of bird behavior, but know zero about these file formats. I know I would want to save my RAW files for digital images, so does the same apply with video? Thanks.

Glenda,
Unlike the still images, non of the DSLRs have facility to shoot RAW.

Are you shooting in 1080p or 720p? Are you editing your different clips into one single clip of a behaviour a or are you just saving the .MOV files?

I would suggest that you save your .MOV files. The reason being, if tomorrow someone finds one of your animal behaviour clips important, then he/she would like to utilise it. The original .MOV file help. At times one can uprez it a bit and intercut with other higher resolution footages without any noticeable issues.

I save my originals to one folder and save. While editing you can copy the required clips to another folder and work on those.

Cheers,
